Success! After a lot of hard work in early Spring, we cleared the land at Beefayre HQ, planted our first seeds and ‘Sylvie’s Bee Meadow’ was born. With more than a little trepidation, we waited for the first seeds to germinate and germinate they have! We are delighted with the results, an abundance of species and a carpet of glorious colour now greet the eye in our lakeside meadow. These plants are unfortunately annuals, but what a start! Chamomile, Oxeye Daisy, Corn Marigold and Corn Cockle are featured. The honey bees are really happy feeding here and we also have many species of bumble bees, butterflies, hover flies and other pollinators in residence. Plans are well underway to extend our meadows into other areas and work has already started in preparing the ground. Meanwhile, in another month, we will be giving our meadow its first cut and save the new seed for the bigger areas next year. In the Autumn, we will plant all the perennials that are currently in our nursery, into our original Meadow, with any leftover going into the new swathes.
The name ‘Sylvie’s Bee Meadow’, is in honour of my wonderful mother who passed away earlier this year and all the flowers have been planted in her memory.
