What’s the buzz with MEAD?
Mead, or honey wine, is fermented honey with water and yeast. Our medium-dry 12% proof mead is brewed for 6 months, and made only with raw Transylvanian wildflower honey. As the proportions of wildflower species varies each and every year, every yearly batch of mead will be unique.
It is an incredibly ancient alcoholic drink and is steeped in legend and mystery. Archaeological evidence for its production dates back to 7000 BC, and its origins are lost to prehistory.
Mead was known and used by the Vikings, the Saxons, the Celts, and the Egyptians, Greeks, Assyrians, Romans, Incas and Aztecs. Its use by these cultures predates that of any other alcoholic beverage. Mead was also used by the Mayans, and was discovered and used independently by many cultures in both the Old and New World.
During the Golden Age of Ancient Greece, mead was the preferred drink, considered superior to wine. The word for drunk in classical Greek translates to “intoxicated with honey.”
The term “honeymoon” is thought to be traceable to an old Norse practice of the bride’s father dowering her with enough mead to allow for a month-long celebration in honour of her marriage.
